Bangor 4 - 0 Crewe United
WKD Intermediate Cup 01/12/07

Bangor had no problems advancing in the WKD Intermediate Cup at a bitterly cold Clandeboye Park as the Seasiders coasted past mid-Ulster side Crewe United. First half headers from Andy Forsythe and Paul Harbinson gave Bangor the advantage before Colin Beggs and substitute David Irvine added to the scoreline in the second half. Crewe, some 3 leagues below Bangor, struggled to test the home side with Ryan Brown 1 cutting a lonely figure in the Bangor half for much of the game.

Crewe goalkeeper Donard Shannon was in for a busy afternoon, and he was forced into his first save after only 90 seconds when make-shift centre forward Andy Forsythe fired in a low shot from 16 yards.

The home side had the lead in the 8th minute through Andy Forsythe. Dominic Melly, returning from a lengthy injury lay-off, sent in an inviting cross from the left wing allowing Forsythe to power a 10 yard header into the top left corner.

Ryan Brown 2 was gifted a glorious chance to double the advantage a minute later, but the forward scuffed his close range effort after good play from Glenn Hand on the right wing.

Brown's pace was causing no end of problems for the visiting defence, and the forward would have scored but for a goal line clearance after he rounded the advancing Shannon in the 11th minute. Andy Forsythe took the resultant corner which was headed into the net via the underside of the crossbar by Paul Harbinson to mark the defender's 5th goal of the season.

Bangor continued to lay siege to the Crewe goal and Colin Beggs should have added to the lead in the 20th minute. Following some good possession football, Forsythe spread the ball wide to James Bell. From the right wing, Bell sent in a dangerous cross to the back post where Beggs somehow diverted the ball wide of goal from 6 yards.

Beggs turned provider in the 24th minute when his left wing cross picked out Dom Melly, but the midfielder's close range effort was deflected just wide of goal.

A fine run from Andy Forsythe create a glorious chance for the forward to add to his goal in the 26th minute. When clean through on goal, Forsythe delayed his shot allowing a defender to get back and make a challenge. The ball fell kindly for Brown 2, but his 18 yard effort was well blocked by Shannon.

Glenn Hand was next to force Shannon into a smart save after the winger raced clear down the right flank on the half hour mark. Forsythe's resultant inswinging corner was headed over the crossbar by Carl Rezai - making his first start for the Seasiders in the heart of midfield.

Minutes later a fine Beggs pass picked out Brown 2. The lively forward did well to cut in past his marker on the right flank before crashing a 16 yard shot into the side netting.

The same player had a great chance to open his account on the stroke of half time. After keeping the ball for long spells, Melly fired in a great cross from the right wing, but Brown could only send his header just over the cross bar from close range.

Half-time: 2 - 0

Crewe forced Ryan Brown 1 into his only save of the match a minute after the interval when the Bangor 'keeper had to be alert to push Bickerstaff's dipping 25-yard shot over the crossbar..

Bangor were able to rest players ahead of Tuesday night's Carnegie League Cup Final, with Bailie, Irvine and Morrow coming on to replace Harbinson, Rezai and Brown 2 respectively.

It was substitute Andy Morrow who almost added to the score when he latched onto Melly's through ball before forcing Shannon into a fine diving save from 14-yards.

The goal of the game arrived in the 75th minute through Colin Beggs. Morrow picked out Andy Forsythe on the edge of the Crewe penalty area before the forward slipped the ball to his left where Begg's was on hand to sent a delightful right footed chip over the stranded Shannon from 18 yards.

Andy Forsythe continued his fine game as he played a part in the fourth goal in the 77th minute. Having done well to win the ball in midfield, the forward beat his marker before sliding the ball to his left towards Morrow. The substitute rounded the goalkeeper and floated the ball back across goal from the byline allowing David Irvine to climb high and head the ball into the net from close range.
