BANGOR 0-3 H&W WELDERS

CARNEGIE INTERMEDIATE FIRST DIVISION
Tuesday 11th April 2006
by Neil Watson

With both sides looking to bounce back from disappointing defeats at the weekend, the Welders grabbed the lead after just 2 minutes. A long ball up field caused confusion between Andy Massey and Ryan Brown. As both players waited for each other to clear, David Wright nipped in to steal the ball and walk the ball into the unguarded goal.

Minutes later, Andy Massey had a good chance to level the scores, but his powerful header from a Douglas corner flew over the crossbar from 8 yards.

The lively David Wright almost notched up his second goal after 10 minutes. Wright collected the ball before advancing on Brown unchallenged. Brown did well to force Wright wide of goal before parrying the forward’s shot behind for a corner.

After 14 minutes, Ryan Brown had to be on top form to deny Alan Neill. An in swinging corner from Thomas Dickson was met by the head of Neill but from 6 yards out, Brown managed to push the ball over the bar for a corner. From the resulting corner, Alan Neill was again unlucky not to score as his towering header cracked off the crossbar before being cleared.

Bangor’s first effort on target arrived after 35 minutes. John Douglas curled a free kick from 30 yards, but Fox saved easily in the Welders goal.

2 minutes later, Bangor created their best opening of the half. A long punt up field from Ryan Brown found Andy Morrow on the edge of the penalty area. Morrow controlled well before laying the ball into the path of Brian Russell. Russell’s first time shot was blocked well by Fox before the ball was cleared to safety.

Half time: 0 – 1

With only 3 minutes of the second half played, the Welders doubled their lead. An unmarked David Wright guided a Thomas Dickson free kick into the bottom corner of the net with a glancing header.

5 minutes later, the Welders got their third goal to seal the result. Thomas Dickson sneaked in at the back post to latch onto a cross from the right before poking the ball past the helpless Ryan Brown and into the goal.

With the game now safe, the Welders began to ease off creating gaps in their defensive line. Brian Russell found one of these gaps after 58 minutes, but his tame shot from 14 yards was easily saved by Fox.

Andy Morrow was next to test Fox after 71 minutes. Morrow beat one of his markers on the edge of the penalty area before trying to chip the ball over Fox. Unfortunately for Morrow, the former-Bangor keeper was able to hold the ball well.

The closest Bangor came to pulling a goal was after 83 minutes through Andy Morrow. Morrow found space 35 yards from goal before setting off on a mazy run. After beating 3 men, Morrow shot low from 20 yards but the ball thumped off the inside base of the post before bouncing clear.

On the stroke of full time, David Wright had a great chance to grab a deserved hat trick. After gathering another stray Bangor pass, Wright found himself in space 18 yards from goal. Fortunately for Bangor, Wright lost his composure and blasted the ball high over the crossbar.
