BANGOR 1-1 H&W WELDERS

NATIONWIDE IRISH CUP - FIFTH ROUND
Saturday 14th January 2006
by Neil Watson

Welders In a break from the rigors of the league, Bangor and the Welders fought out an evenly contested Irish Cup tie. After a slow start, the game finally sprung into life after 18 minutes.

Darren Kitson, returning against his former team, almost gave the Welders the lead, but, fortunately for Bangor, Kitson’s downward header bounced up to hit the crossbar before the ball was hooked clear.

The Welders were again closest to breaking the deadlock after 21 minutes. A scuffed Dickson shot found Mark Craig in the penalty area, but the forward’s curling effort flew wide of the left post.

Bangor’s first real chance of the match came 2 minutes later. A floated Douglas free kick from 35 yards picked out Cullen Feeney, but Feeney’s powerful header was straight at Andrew fox.

The best passing move of the half gave Bangor their chance to open the scoring from the penalty spot after 28 minutes. Neat passing between Morrow, Lee Feeney and Douglas allowed Cullen Feeney to steal a yard inside the penalty area. As Feeney stepped away from Jason Allen, the midfielder was tripped and Brian Turkington duly awarded the penalty. Lee Feeney stepped up but his spot kick was well saved by Fox.

A minute later, from the resultant corner, Lee Feeney made amends for his miss, curling his shot in superbly from the right corner of the penalty area.

Bangor’s lead lasted only 3 minutes when the Welders were given their chance from the penalty spot. Brian Turkington adjudged Grant Dunlop to have handled the ball inside the area. Stephen Johnston grabbed the ball and hammered home past the diving Brown.

Welders Ryan Brown denied the Welders their second goal with a tremendous save after 39 minutes. A 25 yard shot from McNamara was blocked but the rebound fell kindly to Neill. The forward’s point blank shot from 12 yards was superbly pushed round the post by the Bangor ‘keeper.

Half-time: 1-1

The second half failed to deliver many goalmouth chances with both teams instead battling hard in midfield.

Bangor’s best chance to grab the lead was when Cullen Feeney met a John Douglas cross. Feeney’s header flew across goal but the base of the post kept the ball out as Massey charged in for the rebound.

Mark Craig had the Welders’ best chance but his toe-poked effort from a scramble went just wide of the upright after 70 minutes.

Craig was again in a dangerous position bearing down on goal, but a crucial block by Andy Massey stopped the ball reaching Ryan Brown.
