COAGH UNITED 0-1 BANGOR![]() Carnegie First Division Match Report by Neil Watson Saturday 18th March 2006 After only a minute, Coagh United should have been a goal in front through David Calderwood. A long cross from the left flank found Calderwood on the edge of the Bangor area, but the midfielder’s effort was straight at Ryan Brown 1 who held on to the shot gratefully. Bangor’s best chance of the half fell to David Officer after 22 minutes. Ryan Brown 2 found himself in space on the right wing before sliding a low ball across goal. The Coagh defence missed the ball, leaving Officer with only the ‘keeper to beat. As Officer struggled to get the ball out of his feet, Kempton blocked Officer’s effort excellently sending the ball behind for a corner.
Ryan Brown 1 had to be on top form after 27 minutes to deny Mark McMenemy from 30 yards. The midfielder collected a Bangor clearance before volleying towards the Bangor goal. The Bangor ‘keeper dived to his right to avert any danger. With 31 minutes played, Brown 1 again had to be alert to keep the Coagh attacking threat at bay. David Calderwood shot low from 12 yards but the Bangor ‘keeper was well placed to smoother any danger. As the half drew to a close, Andy Massey saw his headed effort from a Nicholl cross saved by Kempton while Grant Dunlop was also denied by the Coagh shot stopper from 20 yards. Half-time: 0 – 0After 54 minutes, Bangor were awarded a penalty by referee Mr Hunter who adjudged a Coagh defender to have handled David Officer’s left wing cross. Andy Morrow stepped up to take the penalty but the Bangor captain slammed his effort wide of the left post. Ryan Brown 1 again denied the lively David Calderwood this time after 66 minutes. The midfielder tested the Bangor ‘keeper with a dipping volley, but Brown 1 was equal to the effort, superbly tipping it over the crossbar.
The breakthrough finally arrived after 70 minutes through Bangor captain Andy Morrow. Barry Holland gathered a deep left wing cross from substitute McCloskey on the right touchline. Holland produced some fine skill while cutting in from the right, nut-megging his marker, before hammering a low ball across the front of the goal. Andy Morrow sneaked in front of his marker at the front post to neatly flick the ball past the sprawling ‘keeper to make amends for his earlier penalty miss. With time running out, Coagh exerted pressure on the Bangor defence in search of a opening. Substitutes Alan Beck and Kenny Paul both created space outside the penalty area, but their efforts were well closed down by the impressive Massey and Cheevers.
On the stroke of full-time, Coagh thought they had taken the lead through Kenny Paul. A corner from the right was headed across goal by Paul. The glanced header seemed to be destined for the net until Jackie Kerr managed to block the ball on the line despite vehement appeals by the Coagh team that a goal should be awarded. Bangor almost dealt Coagh a sucker punch 3 minutes into injury time. Andy Morrow sent Ryan Brown 2 clear of the Coagh back line. As Brown 2 rounded Kempton, the forward’s left footed effort lack power allowing Tony Clarke to clear off the goal line.
