BARN UNITED 0-3 BANGORSteel & Sons Cup 3rd Round (Replayed) Match Report by Neil Watson Saturday 24th September 2005
With a strong wind in their back, Barn forced an early corner. From the corner, a Barn attacker headed over the bar from only 4 yards. Despite playing into a strong wind, Bangor grabbed the lead in the 10th minute. A good cross David Officer on the left wing picked out Brian Russell who stretched to volley the ball home from 10 yards past the diving Harrison. With Bangor passing the ball around nicely, Barn struggled to get into the match. On 23 minutes, Bangor doubled their lead through Jim McCloskey. A cross-field ball by McStravick picked out Morrow on the right hand side of the penalty area. Morrow’s cross picked out Cheevers who flicked the ball on for McCloskey who headed home at the back post. Bangor could have added to their lead through Massey and McCloskey. Massey powered a header just wide from a corner, while McCloskey was unlucky to see a curling left footed shot drift just wide of the left hand post. On 33 minutes, Andy Morrow was awarded a penalty after the Barn ‘keeper hauled the striker to the ground after a mistake. Morrow dusted himself off and coolly slid the ball into the bottom left hand corner of the net. Half time: Barn United 0 – 3 BangorWith Bangor now able to play with the wind in their backs’, an early corner was forced on the right. The in swinging corner from McCloskey had to be headed off the line to save a certain goal. McCloskey was unfortunate not to double his tally for the day after 54 minutes. The lanky forward ran on to a fantastic through ball by Morrow, but his chip over the advancing keeper landed on the roof of the net. As Bangor kept Barn on the back foot, Andy Morrow almost added to the score on 65 minutes. A good through ball by Johnny Cheevers allowed Morrow to shoot low only for the ball to rebound off the inside of the left post and eventually be cleared to safety. In a rare foray in the Bangor area, Barn were perhaps unlucky not to pull a goal back as Bangor failed to properly clear their lines. A scuffed clearance fell to a Barn attacker who dragged his shot across goal and just wide of the upright. With the game petering out, Bangor made a number of substitutions bringing on Douglas and Cleary for Officer and Cheevers respectively. After 85 minutes, Barn had their best chance to grab a consolation goal. The referee awarded Barn a heavily disputed penalty after a handball by John Kennedy in the area. Andy Waide stepped up, but Ryan Brown 1 dived low to his left to block the shot before the ball was cleared to safety. Full time: Barn United 0 – 3 BangorBarn Untied: Bangor: Scorers: Russell (10), McCloskey (24), Morrow (33 - pen). |
