BANGOR 3 - 0 DUNDELA
CARNEGIE LEAGUE CUP SEMI-FINAL - Dixon Park,
Ballyclare
Wednesday 24th October 2007
Match Report by Neil Watson
Bangor booked their place in the Carnegie League Cup
Final with a comprehensive 3 nil victory over Dundela. Two
first half goals from Paul McDowell set Bangor on their way
before Andy Forsythe added a third in the second half to
seal victory.
It took the Seasiders only 7 minutes to open the scoring.
Glenn Hand stole possession from former-Bangor player David
Officer before racing to the Dundela byline. The tricky
winger fired the ball across goal where Andy Morrow gathered
at the back post and floated the ball back into the danger
area for Paul McDowell to power a header past the exposed
goalkeeper from close range.
Bangor continued to press forward in search of a second
goal, playing some attractive football in the process. One
such move on the half hour mark involved McDowell, Irvine
and Forsythe combining to create an opening for Andy Morrow,
but the forward's shot was smartly saved by the 'keeper.
The lively Paul McDowell scored his 10th goal of the
competition 3 minutes later after some more good play from
Glenn Hand. The winger raced clear unchallenged down the
right flank before centring the ball for the unmarked
McDowell who coolly picked his spot past the helpless
'keeper.
Former-Bangor midfielder Craig Dougherty had the best of
Dundela's chances late in the first half when he thumped a
20 yard freekick wide of goal before heading over from 8
yards after a cross from another former-Bangor favourite,
Jackie Kerr.
Half-time: 0 - 2
Dundela began the second half brightly and it was only
some committed defending from Stephen Munn that forced
Jackie Kerr's 18 yard shot wide of the Bangor goal in the
56th minute.
Ryan Brown 1 was forced into his first save of the night
in the 65th minute when he had to move quickly to hold onto
No 10's stinging shot after receiving a pass from No 9.
Bangor raced to the other end where James Bell's
in-swinging corner was goalbound until the Dundela
goalkeeper could scamper backwards to push the ball to
safety.
The impressive Glenn Hand had a glorious chance to add to
Bangor's lead in the 71st minute when he raced clear of the
Dundela defence after an Irvine pass. As Hand closed in on
goal, some good tracking back from a Dundela defender forced
the Bangor man to poke his 10 yard effort wide of the mark.
Hand made up for his miss a minute later as he again
provided the vital pass for Bangor's goal. Having collected
a lovely, defence splitting pass from Morrow on the right,
Hand advanced before whipping the ball across goal where
Andy Forsythe raced in from the left flank to hammer the
ball home from 8 yards.
Dundela began to throw more men forward in search of a
goal and No 8 came close in the 80th minute when his
powerful header had to be pushed over the crossbar by Ryan
Brown 1.
The Bangor defence proved resiliant enough to keep the
Dundela threat at bay, and the Seasiders can now look
forward to the final against a hotly-tipped Loughgall side.
