BANGOR 3-0 COLERAINE
WILKINSON SWORD LEAGUE CUP FINAL - TUESDAY 20th April 1993

Bangor went in to this match very much the favourites as they were unbeaten in 16 games.  Jonathan Magee was ruled out through injury and Mark Glendinning was not fully fit so he was kept on the bench.

After 11 minutes Bangor had a scare when Johnny McIvor latched on to a Keith Douglas pass. McIvor rounded the Bangor keeper Eachus and lofted the ball goalwards. However the quick thinking of John Muldoon saw him sprint towards the goal line to head the ball off crossbar and post and then away to safety.

Bangor then began to enforce their authority and made the breakthrough on 22 minutes. Tony Canning raced down the right and crossed a high ball into the area which was headed clear by the Coleraine defence.  Ricky McEvoy was perfectly placed to latch on to the clearance and volleyed the ball home from the edge of the area.

Three minutes later, Bangor scored their second goal. Paul Byrne launched a corner kick from the right to the far post and Stephen Brown headed down and into the net.  Bangor now had the cushion of two goals, but Coleraine still had plenty of fight.

HALF TIME  -  BANGOR 2 - 0  COLERAINE

The second half was only two minutes old when Derek Cook went close with a header from a Brian Donaghy cross. Ultimately Coleraine struggled to find a way through a well organised Bangor back line.

The decisive goal came on 62 minutes in remarkable circumstances.  Bangor were awarded a corner on the left, but manager Nigel Best delayed it for a substitution.  Mark Glendinning replaced Connor McCaffrey and ran straight in to the penalty area. Glendinning hardly had time to check his run as the ball was whipped in to the near post. Glendinning arrived just in time to glance a header in to the net with his first touch of the ball.

The game was over as a contest and Bangor began to ooze confidence. Davy O'Hare was called in to action to save a 30 yard shot from David McCallan on 86 minutes, but in the end Bangor cruised to victory.
